Marmaris

A History

Marmaris
Marmaris

Known to the ancients as Physcus. The walls of its old castle enclose the Old Town with lovely crooked narrow streets and marvelous views.

It is thought that the first settlement in Marmaris, whose history dates back to 3400 BC, began with the arrival of a tribe to the region, whose leader was called Kar. The area was then called Karla after him, and its location around the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas always made it an appealing region.

Suleyman the Magnificent assembled a force of 200,000 in 1522, whilst launching the siege of the Knights of St John's base in Rhodes (Rodos). Soon afterwards, he made the city more powerful with the rebuilding of the tiny castle overlooking the town. Lord Nelson and his entire fleet sheltered in the harbour in 1798, en route to Egypt to defeat Napoleon's armada at the Battle of Aboukir.

Marmaris therefore became a place where different civilisations reigned over time, and there is architectural and historical evidence of Egyptian, Asdur, Ion, Dor, Persian, Macedonian, Syrian, Roman, Byzantium, Seljuk and Ottoman presence.

Marmaris is said to be the Jewel of the Turkish Riviera. It is Turkey's most sophisticated and multi-faceted resort. Located where the Aegean sea meets the Mediterranean the beautiful bay is famous for its yachting and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Summers are extremely hot and dry, with daytime temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees, and winters are warm and wet. The area is quite typical of a Mediterranean climate.

The beaches are not the greatest in the world but are more than adequate for children and adults alike. The sand is mostly dark sand and a bit gritty. The beaches are not very wide and the top half is covered in sunbeds and umbrellas which you can rent for a nominal fee. The sea is warm, crystal clear and perfect for swimming.

The famous Bar Street is just what it says, a street chock full of night clubs of every description which are open until 4 am.

Netsel Marina is an important yachting centre full of romantic restaurants, shops and boutiques. The traffic-free promenade stretching from the marina all the way round the bay to Icmeler. It has a sophisticated 'Riviera' feel to it, concidered to be reminiscent of St.Tropez.
